Scope of the Report

The global Bio-based Dicyclopentadiene (Bio-DCPD) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 1.75 million in 2025 to US$ 20.00 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 25.4% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2025, global Bio-based Dicyclopentadiene (Bio-DCPD) capacity 700 Tons, sales reached approximately 660 Tons, with an average market price of around 2,640 USD/Ton, industrial gross margin 37%.

Bio-based Dicyclopentadiene (Bio-DCPD) is an industrial C5-derived cyclic olefin in which renewable biomass or biomass-derived hydrocarbons replace all or part of the fossil carbon input while preserving the molecular structure and functional performance of conventional DCPD. The molecule has the formula C₁₀H₁₂ and a molecular weight of approximately 132.20 g/mol, with a normal boiling point of roughly 170–172°C, a melting/freezing range around 32–34°C, liquid density close to 0.97–0.99 g/cm³, and a flash point around 32°C. From a commercial standpoint, Bio-DCPD is therefore better understood as a sustainable-feedstock version of an established chemical platform rather than as a new molecule. Existing industrial DCPD specifications remain relevant: resin-oriented material can be supplied at approximately 60–80% purity, grades above about 85% can serve unsaturated polyester applications, high-purity industrial DCPD is commonly around 91–95%, while demanding polymerization and specialty-chemical applications can require purity of 98% or higher. The industrial Bio-DCPD market should cover bulk chemical feedstock rather than laboratory reagents, and should exclude downstream PDCPD resin, DCPD-modified resins and chemically transformed DCPD derivatives.

Bio-DCPD technology is developing along two distinct commercialization pathways: physically bio-derived synthesis and mass-balance integration into existing petrochemical infrastructure. The direct biomass pathway can start from pentose-derived furfural or furfuryl intermediates generated from lignocellulosic biomass and convert them through hydrogenation, ring transformation, dehydration and dehydrogenation into cyclopentene or cyclopentadiene, followed by cyclopentadiene dimerization to DCPD. This route can ultimately deliver a product whose molecular carbon is physically derived from biomass, but industrial economics depend heavily on catalyst lifetime, selectivity, continuous processing, by-product control and high-purity separation. The second pathway feeds renewable or bio-circular hydrocarbons such as bio-naphtha or waste-oil-derived cracker feedstocks into existing refinery and steam-cracker systems and allocates renewable attributes to DCPD under a certified mass-balance methodology. This approach has a substantially lower commercialization barrier because it leverages established C5 recovery, CPD dimerization and purification infrastructure.

Bio-DCPD is becoming a decarbonization interface for established high-performance polymer and specialty-chemical value chains rather than a stand-alone green chemical niche. Upstream inputs can include agricultural residues, lignocellulosic sugars, furfural and renewable hydrocarbon feedstocks; the midstream chain covers biomass conversion or cracking, C5 recovery, cyclopentadiene generation, dimerization, DCPD purification, quality control and sustainability certification. Downstream demand includes polydicyclopentadiene, hydrocarbon resins, unsaturated polyester resins, tricyclodecane dimethanol, norbornene derivatives, ethylidene norbornene and other specialty intermediates serving automotive, industrial equipment, composites, coatings, adhesives and advanced polymers. A notable commercial chain was established in September 2023 when Shell Chemicals Europe supplied certified bio-circular DCPD to OQ Chemicals for the manufacture of OxBalance TCD Alcohol DM. Subsequent developments have increasingly involved certification and supply-chain integration, with additional sustainable DCPD eligibility emerging within major cracker and C5 operations.

The Bio-DCPD market is evolving toward a “drop-in performance plus traceable renewable carbon” proposition, and this structural shift is likely to shape both competitive positioning and future demand. Initial adoption is expected to concentrate in higher-value applications where carbon-footprint reduction can be transmitted downstream to automotive, electronics, specialty coatings, packaging and engineered-material customers rather than in highly price-sensitive commodity resin markets. Large petrochemical suppliers have an advantage in mass-balance products because they already control cracker feedstocks, C5 separation and established customer qualification systems, while direct biomass routes could develop a differentiated position where physically measurable bio-based carbon becomes important. Certification coverage expanded further through 2025–2026, while parallel advances in DCPD frontal polymerization, rapid processing and additive manufacturing are broadening the technical opportunity set for PDCPD materials. As a result, Bio-DCPD growth is likely to be driven less by wholesale substitution of conventional DCPD and more by progressive penetration of certified low-carbon grades into selected applications that can monetize traceability, Scope 3 reduction and renewable-content attributes.
