Scope of the Report
The global n-Butyl Methacrylate (n-BMA) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 219 million in 2025 to US$ 300 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.7% from 2026 to 2032.
In 2024, global n-Butyl Methacrylate (n-BMA) production reached approximately 102 K tons, with an average global market price of around US$ 2,032/ton.
n-Butyl methacrylate (n-BMA; CAS: 97-88-1) is an ester monomer formed by methacrylic acid and n-butanol, with the molecular formula C₈H₁₄O₂. It is a colorless, flammable liquid at room temperature and can undergo free radical polymerization.
n-Butyl Methacrylate (n-BMA) is the n-butyl ester of methacrylic acid. It is made industrially either by catalytic trans-esterification of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with n-butanol or by direct esterification of methacrylic acid (MAA) with n-butanol; the monomer is shipped inhibited and must be stored under an oxygen-containing headspace to keep the stabilizer effective. Key upstreams are MMA/MAA and n-butanol; downstreams include architectural/industrial & automotive coatings, wood coatings, pressure-sensitive/structural adhesives & sealants, printing inks, and textile/leather finishes, where n-BMA acts as a “softening/plasticizing” comonomer improving flexibility and weatherability.
Production capacity varies significantly among manufacturers, with gross profit margins ranging from approximately 10% to 20%.
Industry Concentration and Supply Stability: n-Butyl methacrylate is dominated by a few companies, such as Röhm, Mitsubishi Chemical Group, and LX MMA. Current production is primarily distributed in Germany, the United States, South Korea, Japan, and China, resulting in relatively stable supply.
Process and Upstream Characteristics: n-Butyl methacrylate is produced by esterification of MAA with n-butanol or by transesterification of MMA with n-butanol. It is highly sensitive to MMA/MAA price fluctuations. Upstream raw material prices significantly influence n-Butyl methacrylate market price fluctuations.
Main Downstream Market and Demand Structure: Focusing on coatings, adhesives, and sealants, while also considering plastic modification and textile treatments. n-BMA, as a "Tg-lowering/flexibility-enhancing" comonomer, improves the weathering resistance, adhesion, and flexibility of acrylic resins.
Product Substitutes: Although n-Butyl methacrylate possesses unique product properties, other methacrylate products can effectively replace it in some applications, providing downstream consumers with more choices. However, n-Butyl methacrylate producers may face the risk of shrinking market share.
