Overzicht
Scope of the Report
The global P-Chloranil market size is predicted to grow from US$ 23.28 million in 2025 to US$ 30.47 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.9% from 2026 to 2032.
P-Chloranil(CAS 118-75-2), also known as tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone, is an important chlorinated quinone fine chemical with the molecular formula C6Cl4O2. It is generally supplied as a yellow to yellow-brown crystalline powder and has strong electron-accepting, oxidizing, dehydrogenating, and crosslinking properties. Industrial production mainly involves the chlorination of phenol or the chlorination and oxidation of hydroquinone. Key upstream materials include phenol, hydroquinone, chlorine, hydrochloric acid, oxidizing agents, process solvents, and environmental treatment materials. Major downstream customers include dye and organic pigment manufacturers, pharmaceutical and steroid intermediate producers, agrochemical intermediate companies, rubber and polymer manufacturers, and other specialty chemical producers. The global effective production capacity was estimated at approximately 9,200 tonnes in 2025, while sales volume reached about 4,087 tonnes, with an average selling price of around USD 5,823 per tonne and an industry gross margin of approximately 20% to 28%.
The global p-chloranil market remains a mature and relatively small segment of the specialty chemicals industry, with industrial production concentrated mainly in China and India, while Europe, North America, and Japan rely largely on imported supply. Competition is determined less by nominal capacity than by stable operating performance, product consistency, customer qualification, and supply reliability. As some plants operate on a batch basis or share production facilities with other chemicals, a certain level of idle capacity remains, and the actual impact of new projects will depend on commissioning progress, customer adoption, and the effectiveness of environmental control systems.
Dyes and organic pigments continue to represent the largest source of demand, supported by the use of high-performance pigments in automotive coatings, industrial coatings, packaging inks, engineering plastics, and color masterbatches. Pharmaceutical and steroid intermediate synthesis requires tighter control of purity, impurities, and batch consistency, resulting in higher added value and stronger customer retention despite its smaller volume contribution. Agrochemical, rubber, and polymer applications provide supplementary demand, although traditional direct agricultural uses continue to decline and are unlikely to become a major source of future growth.
From a product and process perspective, industry development will increasingly focus on reaction yield, purification efficiency, impurity control, and cleaner production. Phenol-based routes benefit from stable feedstock availability and relatively competitive costs but require effective control of chlorination reactions, chlorinated by-products, and wastewater. Hydroquinone-based routes can provide better product consistency but generally involve higher raw material costs. As quality requirements increase, low levels of chlorinated by-products and trace metals, consistent color, a narrow melting range, and comprehensive batch traceability will become increasingly important areas of supplier differentiation.
The p-chloranil market is expected to maintain moderate growth, supported by expanding demand for high-performance organic pigments, pharmaceutical intermediate outsourcing, greater penetration of high-purity industrial grades, and continued development of Asian specialty chemical supply chains. Key constraints include substitution by alternative oxidants and catalytic dehydrogenation technologies, cyclical demand in the pigment industry, rising environmental compliance costs, and backward integration by selected downstream customers. Producers with reliable facilities, effective environmental treatment systems, stable quality management, and long-term customer relationships are expected to strengthen their positions, leading to a gradual increase in market concentration.
