Scope of the Report

The global Doppler Sonar Log market size is predicted to grow from US$ 90.78 million in 2025 to US$ 121 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2025, global sales of Doppler Sonar Log reached approximately 3,867 units, with an average market price of about USD 24,000 unit, an annual production capacity of roughly 4,200 units, and an industry-average gross margin of approximately 35%.

A Doppler Sonar Log is a shipborne navigation instrument that measures vessel speed and distance travelled by applying the acoustic Doppler effect. The system normally transmits ultrasonic pulses from a hull-mounted transducer toward the water column or seabed, receives echoes reflected by suspended particles or the bottom, determines the frequency shift between the transmitted and returned signals, and processes this information together with sound-velocity compensation, transducer alignment, vessel motion and signal-validity algorithms. A complete product commonly comprises one or more bridge displays, a transceiver and signal-processing unit, a hull-mounted or gate-valve transducer, distribution equipment, remote indicators and marine data interfaces. Depending on the acoustic tracking mode and system configuration, it can provide speed through water, speed over ground, longitudinal and transverse velocity, distance run, direction of movement and data-validity status. These measurements are transmitted to radar plotting equipment, ECDIS, autopilots, track-control systems and integrated bridge systems through interfaces such as IEC 61162 or NMEA. Marine Doppler speed logs are used on merchant ships, passenger vessels, fishing vessels, offshore and work vessels, government ships, naval vessels and other surface craft for navigation, manoeuvring, berthing, vessel-performance monitoring and retrofit applications. IMO performance standards specify that speed-and-distance measuring devices support general navigation and ship manoeuvring and establish requirements concerning measurement accuracy, information presentation, data transmission and safe hull installation.

Doppler Sonar Log form a narrow but durable segment of the professional marine-navigation equipment industry. Their economic role should not be confused with that of ordinary GPS speed displays or generic acoustic sensors. A compliant system provides independently measured speed through water or speed over ground, distance travelled and, in more advanced configurations, transverse or multi-axis motion data that can be distributed to radar plotting equipment, ECDIS, autopilots and track-control systems. IMO performance standards create a long-term regulatory foundation by specifying the intended navigation and manoeuvring functions, measurement accuracy, data presentation, output interfaces and hull-installation safety of speed-and-distance measuring equipment. They also require separate devices where a ship must carry both water-referenced and ground-referenced logs. Consequently, low-cost GNSS speed information does not eliminate the need for water-referenced speed on vessels where current effects, true-motion radar calculations, manoeuvring performance and vessel-efficiency analysis are operationally significant. Demand is therefore supported by a combination of mandatory carriage practices, shipowner technical standards, newbuilding specifications, retrofit cycles and the need to maintain compatible sensors throughout the operating life of a vessel.

The supply structure is concentrated, complete Doppler Sonar Log for merchant and surface-vessel applications. Japanese suppliers have strong positions in merchant fleets, integrated bridge packages, shipyard relationships and global lifecycle support. European manufacturers are particularly visible in dual-axis, multisensor, docking and naval configurations, while Chinese producers are expanding through domestic manufacturing, competitive pricing, CCS-oriented product development and OEM or ODM supply. The broader manufacturer pool is considerably larger because it includes subsea DVL specialists, research institutes, legacy installed-base brands and regional private-label suppliers; however, those entities should not automatically be included in the merchant-vessel market. Their approval requirements, target platforms, transducer arrangements and revenue models are materially different. Corporate changes such as Jotron’s acquisition of SKIPPER and the transfer of Wärtsilä’s ANCS business to Solix illustrate that competitive restructuring in this market is driven primarily by installed base, product portfolios, service networks and access to shipowners rather than by large-scale capacity additions.
