Scope of the Report

The global 1,3-Propylene Sulfite market size is predicted to grow from US$ 17.61 million in 2025 to US$ 33.68 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.0% from 2026 to 2032.

Propylene sulfite, under the main scope of this report, refers to 1,3-Propylene Sulfite or Trimethylene Sulfite, CAS 4176-55-0. It is a cyclic sulfite compound used mainly as a lithium-ion battery electrolyte additive, especially for interface modification, electrolyte stability improvement and low-temperature performance enhancement. It is also sold as a research chemical or fine-chemical intermediate. The 1,2-propyleneglycol sulfite isomer, CAS 1469-73-4, should be treated separately.

According to our research, propylene sulfite should be treated as a niche lithium-ion battery electrolyte additive rather than a mainstream electrolyte solvent or a large-volume additive. The most appropriate scope is 1,3-Propylene Sulfite / Trimethylene Sulfite, CAS 4176-55-0. It should not be mixed with 1,2-propyleneglycol sulfite, 1,3-propane sultone, ethylene sulfite, ethylene sulfate, VC, FEC or other electrolyte additives.

From the demand side, its main value lies in electrolyte formulation improvement, especially interface modification, low-temperature behavior, high-temperature stability and compatibility with PC-containing electrolyte systems. However, it is usually used as a low-percentage additive rather than a base solvent. Therefore, market sizing should be based on the standalone additive value, not the total electrolyte market or total lithium battery market.

From the supply side, the public producer evidence is relatively weaker than for mainstream additives such as VC, FEC and DTD. Fujian Chuangxin appears to be one of the stronger China-based production leads. Shuangju Energy has a clear product page and battery-additive positioning, while Sinochem Nanjing has a product lead but needs further isomer verification. TCI, Sigma-Aldrich, J&K and Fisher Scientific should be classified mainly as research-grade, catalog or distribution channels rather than battery-grade bulk producers.

The key product barrier is not ordinary chemical availability, but battery-grade consistency. Customers care about purity, water content, acidity, color, metal ions, residual sulfur-containing impurities, packaging dryness, storage stability and batch-to-batch reproducibility. For electrolyte additive qualification, the material also needs to show stable SEI/CEI behavior, low gas generation, good cycling performance and compatibility with other additives such as VC, FEC, DTD, LiDFP or LiPO₂F₂.

Looking ahead, propylene sulfite is likely to remain a small but useful formulation additive. Its growth will depend on whether electrolyte manufacturers continue using it in specialized low-temperature, PC-compatible, high-voltage or high-temperature formulations. The market should be modeled as a small, China-skewed, formulation-driven electrolyte additive segment, with clear separation between battery-grade producers, high-purity suppliers, research catalog suppliers and distributors.
