Scope of the Report

With the further improvement of the communication rate, the single-channel modulation rate of 50 Gb/s has become the bottleneck of the direct modulation technology, so the demand for EML is increasing, and the external modulator has become one of the research and development priorities. In terms of the data center"s demand for 400 Gb/s and above optical network connections, silicon optical modules have more advantages than traditional optical modules. Modulators integrated on silicon photonic chips - silicon photonic modulators.

Silicon photonic modulators have high integration, high extinction ratio, low loss, low driving voltage, but poor linearity. Therefore, most of the hybrid integrated modulators are currently used to modulate mature lithium niobate through heterogeneous bonding, epitaxy and other technologies. Modulators, InP modulators, and organic modulators are integrated on the silicon substrate, which can achieve a micron-scale size, and the modulation efficiency can reach more than 5 times that of an all-silicon modulator.

Silicon optical modulator technology is relatively mature, and hybrid integrated modulators based on silicon substrates can further improve the performance of the modulator.
