Visão geral

Scope of the Report

The global Space Breeding market size is predicted to grow from US$ 552 million in 2025 to US$ 1,200 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.7% from 2026 to 2032.

Space breeding, also known as aerospace breeding or space mutation breeding, is an agricultural technology that uses the unique environment of space to induce gene mutations in plant seeds, which are then returned to Earth for selection and cultivation of new varieties. This technology combines aerospace technology, biotechnology, and agricultural breeding, using the space environment to induce mutations in the seed's genetic material, such as chromosome deletions, duplications, and translocations. The process includes three stages: space travel, return to Earth, and multi-generational selection. The mutation rate is 3-4 times higher than that of conventional mutation breeding, and the breeding cycle can be shortened to about 4 years. Since China first conducted experiments carrying rice and pepper seeds in space in 1987, this technology has been expanded to various crops such as grains, vegetables, flowers, forage grasses, and medicinal herbs. Space breeding is essentially based on self-genetic mutation, is non-GMO, and has high safety, making it an effective way to create new germplasm and improve crop traits in modern breeding.

Space breeding has broad prospects; as an "evolutionary accelerator," it will provide new possibilities for agricultural transformation, food security, and the space economy. With the development of space technology, future breeding will rapidly expand in both breadth and depth. On the one hand, by building a specialized breeding system through space stations and combining high-throughput omics technologies to precisely analyze mutation mechanisms, targeted screening of high-yield, stress-resistant, and high-quality traits can be achieved, significantly improving efficiency. On the other hand, this technology is expected to cultivate more super crops that are salt-tolerant, flood-resistant, and disease-resistant, in order to address global climate change and resource shortages and reduce pesticide dependence. Furthermore, space breeding supports deep space exploration, such as lunar/Mars agricultural experiments, laying the foundation for human settlement on other planets. Through international cooperation and sharing of experience, China is expected to continue to lead this field, contributing to global food security and sustainable development.
