Visão geral
Scope of the Report
The global Thymidine market size is predicted to grow from US$ 272 million in 2025 to US$ 368 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.4% from 2026 to 2032.
Global sales of thymidine reached 7,556 tons in 2024, with an average selling price of US$33,250 per ton.
Thymidine (or deoxythymidine) is a crucial pyrimidine nucleoside in DNA, pairing with adenine, made of the base thymine and deoxyribose sugar, vital for cell division, and used in labs to synchronize cell cycles (blocking DNA synthesis) and in medicine as a precursor for antiviral drugs like AZT (Azidothymidine). It's phosphorylated to dTMP, which gets incorporated into DNA, and its deficiency can cause serious disorders like Thymidine Kinase 2 deficiency.
Global Thymidine key players include Lonza, Carbopharm GmbH, Zhejiang NHU, Zhejiang Xianfeng Science Technology, Anhui Golden Sun Biopharmaceuticals, etc. India is the largest market, with a share about 45%, followed by North America, with a share about 30 percent. In terms of product, Fermentation Method is the largest segment, with a share about 60%. And in terms of application, the largest application is Zidovudine.
The industrial production of thymidine (β-thymidine) uses either glucose + thymine or D-ribose/2-deoxy-D-ribose + thymine as starting materials. The fermentation route uses food-grade glucose and urea-derived thymine as substrates, followed by one-step glycosylation with recombinant E. coli, resulting in the lowest raw material cost, which can be reduced to $35–40/kg. The chemical route uses plant-derived D-ribose (or deoxyribose) and chemically synthesized thymine, undergoing a three-step reaction of protection, glycosylation, and deprotection. The raw material cost is approximately $55–65/kg, but the product has a clearer impurity profile and is easier to comply with GMP standards.
Raw materials account for approximately 45–55% of the total cost, with the price of thymine ($8–10/kg) and deoxyribose ($12–15/kg) being the key variables. The remaining costs come from enzyme/catalyst costs, solvent recovery, environmental treatment, and energy consumption, while labor and depreciation combined account for less than 15%.
