Scope of the Report

The global Functional Graphite Materials market size is predicted to grow from US$ 50.55 million in 2025 to US$ 143 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.2% from 2026 to 2032.

In this report, functional graphite mainly refers to graphene oxide. Graphene oxide is a two-dimensional carbon nanomaterial obtained by the oxidation of graphene. Its basal plane and sheet edges contain oxygen-containing functional groups such as hydroxyl, epoxy and carboxyl groups, which make it more dispersible in water and polar systems than pristine graphene and enable stronger interfacial interactions with resins, metal ions and biomolecules. In 2025, global sales volume of functional graphite, calculated on a graphene oxide powder equivalent basis, is estimated at approximately 2,736.7 kg, with a global average market price of around USD 18.9 per gram. The upstream segment of the functional graphite value chain mainly includes carbon source materials such as natural flake graphite, expanded graphite and high-purity graphite; oxidation and post-treatment chemicals such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, potassium permanganate and hydrogen peroxide; as well as auxiliary materials and production equipment including deionized water, dispersants, filtration membranes, centrifuges, reactors, drying equipment and waste acid/wastewater treatment systems.

Since Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, physicists at the University of Manchester, successfully isolated graphene from graphite using the micromechanical exfoliation method and were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking work on graphene, global interest in graphene research, development and commercialization has increased significantly. Graphene-related activities now cover material synthesis, functional modification, product development, application validation and technical services across multiple sectors. However, despite strong market attention, the graphene industry remains at an early stage of commercialization, and only a limited number of companies have established scalable production capabilities, stable downstream applications and sustainable profitability. While graphene production technologies have gradually improved and production capacity continues to be released, many downstream applications are still in the research, validation or pilot-production stage. As a result, graphene remains a high-investment, long-cycle emerging material sector, with commercial success largely dependent on application maturity, cost reduction, product consistency and the development of large-scale end-use markets.
