Visão geral

Scope of the Report

The global ABS market size is predicted to grow from US$ 16,746 million in 2025 to US$ 21,248 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.5% from 2026 to 2032.

Global sales of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene reached 9.86 million tons in 2025, with an average price of US$1,736 per ton.

ABS is a kind of polymer obtained through the copolymerization of three kinds of monomers, namely acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. Each of these three monomers has a specific property: the addition of acrylonitrile can improve the anti-corrosion and rigidity properties, butadiene promotes the shock resistance and styrene will contribute the material good fineness. It is among the low cost engineering plastic that is easy to machine and fabricate. ABS is an ideal material for structural applications when impact resistance, strength, and stiffness are required. It is widely used for machining pre-production prototypes such as the auto dashboard since it has excellent dimensional stability and is easy to paint and glue. Natural (beige) ABS and black ABS are FDA compliant for use in food processing applications. Besides, it is widely used in the toys and electron industries including the PC enclosure.

The supply of raw materials for ABS resin exhibits significant dependence on petrochemicals and economies of scale, resulting in substantial differences in its cost structure due to variations in production processes and product grades. Raw material costs account for 70-80% of total costs, with styrene accounting for the largest share (approximately 40-45%, 0.63 tons/ton ABS consumption), followed by acrylonitrile (approximately 20-25%, 0.22 tons/ton ABS consumption), and butadiene accounting for 15-20% (0.15 tons/ton ABS consumption). The prices of all three monomers are directly affected by fluctuations in the oil and gas market. In 2024, styrene was approximately 6400 yuan/ton, acrylonitrile approximately 8000 yuan/ton, and butadiene approximately 8300 yuan/ton, totaling approximately 7037 yuan/ton in raw material costs. Energy and utility costs account for 5-10%. Traditional emulsion processes require large amounts of water and emulsifiers, involve multiple post-processing steps, resulting in high energy consumption and pollution. In contrast, the emerging continuous bulk process ("dry process") eliminates the need for emulsifiers and an aqueous phase, has a shorter process flow, lower energy consumption, and higher product purity, and is gradually replacing traditional processes. Processing and manufacturing costs account for approximately 10-15%, including polymerization, devolatilization, granulation, and drying. Quality control and testing costs account for 3-5%, requiring testing of melt flow index (MFR), impact strength (Izod), heat distortion temperature (HDT), and residual monomer content. Overall, ABS resin is a mid-priced, widely used engineering plastic with significant economies of scale. Its cost structure is influenced by multiple factors, including fluctuations in the prices of the three monomers, energy costs, production process selection (emulsion vs. bulk polymerization), and production capacity. The industry exhibits an oligopolistic structure. While Chinese companies are gradually increasing their market share in the high-end market after breakthroughs in the bulk polymerization process, they still rely on imports for high-purity, high-transparency, and special modified applications.
