Visão geral

Scope of the Report

The global Aerospace PMI Foam Core market size is predicted to grow from US$ 183 million in 2025 to US$ 323 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.5% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2025, global Aerospace PMI Foam Core production reached 261,830 cubic meters, with an average selling price of US$714.28/cubic meter. Haobo (Fujian) New Materials Technology Co., Ltd. has established a PMI foam production line with an annual capacity of 5,000 cubic meters. Rigid foam is the core material in sandwich composite materials. Sandwich structures are a special form of laminated composite materials, generally consisting of facesheets, a bonding layer between the facesheets and the core, and the core. Rigid foam plastics, used as core materials, are primarily used to enhance rigidity and reduce weight. They also have low water absorption and excellent sound and thermal insulation properties, making them widely used in wind power generation, aerospace, shipbuilding, rail transit, green building, and other fields. Major rigid foam materials on the market include PVC foam, PET foam, and PMI foam. PMI foam, due to its superior overall performance, is generally used in demanding components in the aerospace industry. Among foams of the same density, PMI foam currently has the highest specific strength and specific stiffness among rigid closed-cell foams. The pore surfaces of PMI foam materials are composed of solid components, which increase the stiffness of the porous structure. In composite sandwich structures, PMI foam can serve as a structural unit. Currently, PMI is widely used in the European and American aviation sectors, with 80% of US military aircraft using PMI and 83% of civilian aircraft like Boeing. However, PMI usage in the Chinese aviation sector remains around 7%. This is primarily due to significant technological differences between China and other countries, as China still lacks the engineering technology for Z-reinforced PMI (patented by the US company Aztex for its Z-pin). Currently, Evonik products from Germany dominate the market for Aerospace PMI Foam Core. Only a few Chinese manufacturers, including Hunan Zihard Material Technology Co., Ltd., Cashem Advanced Materials Hi-tech Co., Ltd. and Hybo FOAM, have achieved domestic production. The rapid growth of the military industry in recent years, coupled with strong demand for lightweight composite materials for fighter jets and drones, presents growth opportunities for domestic manufacturers.

In the aerospace industry, aerospace composite components are typically "sandwich" structures, consisting of a skin layer and a core material. Currently, the main types of composite core materials are honeycomb, rigid foam, and balsa wood. Honeycomb cores primarily use aluminum honeycomb and paper honeycomb, rigid foams include PMI, PVC, PET, PU, and EPS, and balsa wood is mainly balsa wood. Composite sandwich structures are the preferred choice for manufacturing lightweight, high-strength aircraft components. They are commonly used in wing leading edges, rudders, landing gear doors, wing bodies, and wingtip fairings. Among foams of the same density, PMI foam currently boasts the highest specific strength and specific stiffness among rigid closed-cell foam materials. The pores of PMI foam are composed of truly solid parts, increasing the stiffness of the porous structure. In composite sandwich structures, PMI foam can serve as a structural unit. Currently, the application of PMI in the European and American aerospace fields is highly mature, with 80% of US military aircraft and 83% of Boeing and other commercial aircraft using PMI. In contrast, the application of PMI in the Chinese aerospace field is around 7%. The main reason is the significant technological differences between China and other countries. China has not yet mastered the engineering technology of Z-axis enhanced PMI (Z-pin patent of Aztex Corporation in the United States).
