Scope of the Report
The global Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant market size is predicted to grow from US$ 40,891 million in 2025 to US$ 63,094 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.4% from 2026 to 2032.
In 2025, global newly commissioned pumped storage hydropower plants reached 110 units, with an average selling price of USD 380 million per unit, total planned and construction capacity of approximately 140 units, and an average gross margin of about 27%.
A pumped storage hydropower plant is a large-scale energy storage and regulation facility that uses water as the medium to convert electrical energy into potential energy and back. It typically consists of an upper reservoir, a lower reservoir, water conveyance systems, reversible pump-turbines, and generator units. During periods of low electricity demand or excess renewable generation, surplus electricity is used to pump water to the upper reservoir for energy storage; during peak demand periods, stored water is released to generate electricity. Pumped storage hydropower plants provide key grid services such as peak shaving, frequency regulation, reserve capacity, and system stability, and represent the most mature and widely deployed form of long-duration, grid-scale energy storage.
The upstream of pumped storage hydropower plants mainly includes manufacturers of hydropower equipment and key components (such as pump-turbines, generators, transformers, and control systems), suppliers of civil engineering materials, and engineering design and survey service providers. The midstream consists of EPC contractors and specialized hydropower construction companies responsible for project design, construction, installation, and commissioning. Downstream customers are primarily national grid companies, regional power utilities, and renewable energy investors, with pumped storage plants serving as grid-side infrastructure to provide regulation and energy storage services for power systems and renewable integration.
Global key Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant players cover GE Renewable Energy, EDF, Voith Hydro, Schluchseewerk, Toshiba, etc.

All MarketResearchReports.com strategic research reports follow a rigorous, multi-stage methodology combining AI-assisted data synthesis with expert analyst validation.
Systematic collection from 500+ verified sources including SEC filings, industry databases (Bloomberg, Statista, OECD), regulatory filings, trade publications, patent databases, and company annual reports. AI-assisted extraction identifies relevant data points across 10,000+ documents per report.
Dual-validation approach: bottom-up sizing aggregates segment-level production, consumption, and trade data; top-down sizing cross-validates against macroeconomic indicators and total addressable market estimates. Discrepancies >5% trigger analyst review.
Company profiles built from public financial disclosures, product launches, M&A activity, job postings (as capability proxies), and supply chain mapping. Market share estimates triangulated across revenue, capacity, and shipment data.
CAGR projections use time-series regression on 5-10 years of historical data, adjusted for identified demand drivers (technology adoption curves, regulatory catalysts, demographic shifts) and demand inhibitors (cost barriers, substitution risk). Scenario modeling covers base, optimistic, and conservative cases.
All quantitative outputs reviewed by a domain-specialist analyst before publication. Data triangulation requires minimum 3 independent sources for every key figure. Reports undergo a structured peer review against our 47-point quality checklist covering methodology, data citations, logical consistency, and formatting standards.
On-demand reports are generated at time of purchase, incorporating the most recent available data. Static reports are republished when underlying market conditions shift by >10% from baseline assumptions. Purchasers receive update notifications for 12 months.
