概述

Scope of the Report

In 2025, global sales volume of PTMEG 1800 and 2000 reached 823 K metric tons, with an average price of $2,531 per metric ton.

PTMEG 1800 and PTMEG 2000 refer to two mainstream nominal molecular-weight grades of polytetramethylene ether glycol, a linear polyether diol terminated by hydroxyl groups. The products are generally manufactured through polymerization of tetrahydrofuran and are supplied as white wax-like solids at ambient temperature that become clear, viscous liquids when heated. The nominal molecular weights of the two grades are approximately 1,800 and 2,000, respectively, with differences in hydroxyl value, viscosity and formulation behavior that allow polyurethane and elastomer producers to select grades according to polymer structure and processing requirements. PTMEG 1800 and PTMEG 2000 mainly function as high-performance soft-segment raw materials for spandex fibers, thermoplastic and cast polyurethane elastomers, polyurethane resins, coatings, adhesives, sealants, polyester elastomers such as TPEE, and selected polyamide elastomers. Their commercial value is primarily associated with elasticity, hydrolysis resistance, abrasion resistance, low-temperature flexibility and durability in downstream polymer systems.

Industry Chain Analysis

The industrial chain of PTMEG 1800 and PTMEG 2000 begins with upstream hydrocarbon or renewable feedstocks used to produce 1,4-butanediol, followed by conversion into tetrahydrofuran and polymerization of THF into PTMEG. Integrated producers can connect BDO, THF and PTMEG production within the same manufacturing system, improving feedstock security, logistics efficiency and control over production economics. In the midstream stage, process capability is reflected not only in polymerization capacity but also in molecular-weight control, molecular-weight distribution, purification, moisture management and stable hydroxyl functionality. Representative commercial specifications show measurable differences between PTMEG 1800 and PTMEG 2000 in hydroxyl value and viscosity, making grade consistency important for downstream formulation.

Downstream, PTMEG is reacted with isocyanates or other functional intermediates to become the soft segment of spandex, TPU, CPU and polyurethane resins, or is incorporated into polyester and polyamide elastomers. Value creation therefore shifts from basic feedstock cost at the upstream end toward process reliability, specification consistency and application performance at the PTMEG stage. Producers with BDO/THF integration can gain cost and supply advantages, while suppliers with stronger grade-development capabilities can create additional value through molecular-weight distribution control and customized products. The emergence of bio-BDO and BioPTMG adds carbon footprint and traceability as new dimensions of value-chain competition.

Regional Insights

Asia-Pacific represents the principal production and demand center for PTMEG 1800 and PTMEG 2000. The region combines a dense PTMEG manufacturing base with the world's most extensive spandex production chain and rapidly developing polyurethane elastomer industries. China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Vietnam host confirmed production or integrated supply activities among the manufacturers covered by this study. Recent investment patterns reinforce the region's strategic importance: Hyosung has expanded PTMG production and vertical integration in China and Vietnam, including a bio-BDO-to-PTMG chain, while BASF is consolidating its Asian PolyTHF production into Caojing, China. These developments indicate that Asia-Pacific competition is increasingly determined by scale, backward integration, downstream proximity and operating efficiency rather than by greenfield capacity additions alone.

Europe and North America remain important established markets for high-performance polyurethane and elastomer applications and also retain strategic PTMEG production. BASF continues to operate PolyTHF assets in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Geismar, United States, alongside Caojing, giving the company a three-region production platform. Japan maintains a technologically differentiated supplier base led by specialty chemical producers with broad molecular-weight product portfolios. The regional opportunity therefore differs by market: Asia-Pacific offers the deepest integration with spandex and new capacity, whereas mature Western and Japanese markets place greater emphasis on performance consistency, specialty elastomer applications, technology and increasingly lower-carbon material solutions.
