Overview
Scope of the Report
The global 5-Nitroisophthalic Acid market size is predicted to grow from US$ 28.76 million in 2025 to US$ 42.35 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2026 to 2032.
5-Nitroisophthalic acid is a nitro-substituted aromatic dicarboxylic acid with the molecular formula C8H5NO6 and CAS number 618-88-2. It is generally supplied as a white to pale-yellow crystalline powder, with major non-reagent products comprising industrial grades with purity of 98.0%-<99.0% and pharmaceutical-intermediate grades with purity ≥99.0%. It is typically produced from isophthalic acid through mixed-acid nitration, crystallization, filtration, washing, and drying. Key upstream inputs include isophthalic acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, alkaline neutralizing agents, utilities, and packaging materials, while major downstream customers include manufacturers of iodinated contrast-media intermediates and APIs, pharmaceutical-intermediate and custom-synthesis companies, and a smaller number of specialty polymer, coating, and fine-chemical producers. Based on non-reagent products measured at producer ex-factory prices, global effective nameplate capacity in 2025 is estimated at approximately 5,600 metric tons, with actual sales volume of about 3,846 metric tons, an average ex-factory price of approximately USD 7.65 per kilogram, and typical producer gross margins of approximately 26%-37%.
The global 5-nitroisophthalic acid market is characterized by a high degree of specialization and regional concentration, with most non-reagent industrial capacity located in China and India and only a limited number of established producers remaining in Europe. Market participants are generally pharmaceutical-intermediate, iodinated contrast-media intermediate, or custom-chemical manufacturers, while relatively few companies treat the product as a standalone core business. Production is commonly carried out in multipurpose nitration facilities or integrated with downstream esterification and reduction processes. Competition is determined not only by price but also by impurity control, batch consistency, process safety, environmental compliance, and customer-audit capabilities, giving qualified producers with stable pharmaceutical customer relationships a stronger position.
Non-ionic iodinated contrast media remain the principal source of demand. 5-Nitroisophthalic acid is further converted into dimethyl 5-nitroisophthalate, 5-aminoisophthalic acid, and more advanced intermediates used in the contrast-media value chain. Growth in diagnostic imaging procedures, expansion of the installed base of CT equipment, population ageing, and improving healthcare access in emerging markets will continue to support demand for related intermediates. Applications in specialty polymers, coatings, dyes, and other fine chemicals provide additional consumption, but their combined contribution remains limited and is unlikely to alter the dominant position of pharmaceutical and diagnostic-imaging applications.
Manufacturing development will increasingly focus on nitration safety, mixed-acid recycling, low-temperature heat transfer, automated feed control, mother-liquor recovery, and the reduction of waste acid and wastewater. Conventional batch mixed-acid nitration is technically mature and operationally flexible, but it involves concentrated heat release, relatively high acid consumption, and substantial environmental-treatment requirements. Automated process control and continuous nitration can improve reaction stability and reduce unwanted by-products. Producers are also expected to expand further into esterification, reduction, and advanced contrast-media intermediates in order to capture higher value, share manufacturing infrastructure, and reduce exposure to price volatility in the base intermediate.
The market is expected to maintain steady growth, although expansion will continue to be constrained by environmental and safety expenditure, lengthy customer-qualification cycles, concentrated downstream demand, and captive production by integrated manufacturers. Large contrast-media API and intermediate producers may secure supply through long-term purchasing agreements, custom manufacturing, or internal integration, causing the merchant market to grow more slowly than final contrast-media demand. At the same time, pharmaceutical customers will continue to tighten requirements for traceability, impurity profiles, and supply continuity. Smaller suppliers lacking compliant facilities and stable quality-management systems will face increasing pressure, and the global supply structure is likely to gradually concentrate among producers with greater scale, stronger compliance, and multistep intermediate capabilities.
