Overview

Scope of the Report

The global AEM Water Electrolyzer market size is predicted to grow from US$ 98 million in 2025 to US$ 10,496 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 87.4% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2025, global AEM Water Electrolyzer production reached approximately 35 MW, with an average global market price of around US$2,864 per kW. AEM Water Electrolyzer is a is an electrolytic hydrogen production device. Water electrolysis is the reaction of splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. AEM electrolysis is the electrolysis of water that utilises a semipermeable membrane that conducts hydroxide ions (OH−) called an anion exchange membrane.

The global AEM water electrolyzer market is highly concentrated. In 2025, the top three manufacturers accounted for over 70% of global revenue, though competition is expected to grow as new entrants emerge.

Anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis is a third-generation hydrogen production technology that combines the cost advantages of alkaline electrolyzers with the fast dynamic response of PEM systems. AEM can operate without precious metal catalysts such as iridium or ruthenium, allowing flexible catalyst options and lower costs. The market is now transitioning from laboratory research to early commercial demonstration, attracting significant R&D and industrial investment.

Product development focuses on improving energy efficiency, reducing power consumption, and scaling up to higher capacities, particularly megawatt-level systems. Megawatt-scale AEM electrolyzers offer lower hydrogen production costs and better integration with renewable energy sources. Leading manufacturers have raised single-stack power to around 200 kW, with energy consumption as low as 4.3–4.8 kWh/Nm³. Core material development, including catalysts and ion-exchange membranes, remains essential for performance and durability. Government subsidies and large-scale programs like IPCEI are accelerating domestic production line construction and demonstration projects.

On the corporate side, Enapter was the first company to mass-produce and commercialize AEM electrolyzers. Since 2017, it has launched the EL series, followed by the higher-performance EL4 series and the Multicore integrated solution, reaching megawatt-scale modules by 2023. In China, Shenzhen Wenstone Hydrogen Energy Technology launched the first self-developed 2.5 kW AEM electrolyzer in 2023, expanded to a 10 kW integrated system, and now offers megawatt-scale products. In 2025, the company announced a production facility in Hefei, planning China's first megawatt-scale AEM line with an initial annual capacity of 300 MW.
