Overview
Scope of the Report
The global Automotive Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 9,305 million in 2025 to US$ 13,350 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2026 to 2032.
A natural gas vehicle (NGV) is an alternative fuel vehicle that uses compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG). Natural gas vehicles should not be confused with vehicles powered by LPG (mainly propane), which is a fuel with a fundamentally different composition.
Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) are gaining renewed interest amid global decarbonization efforts, especially in regions where renewable energy and EV infrastructure remain underdeveloped. The Asia-Pacific region, led by China, India, and Pakistan, continues to dominate NGV adoption due to government subsidies, abundant gas reserves, and large commercial fleets. In contrast, North America and Europe are seeing NGVs positioned mainly for heavy-duty transport, such as long-haul trucks and municipal buses, where electric solutions are less viable due to range and power limitations.
A key trend is the gradual shift from CNG to LNG in heavy-duty applications, offering higher energy density and longer ranges. This is particularly evident in logistics and port operations. Moreover, with biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) becoming more accessible, NGVs are also increasingly integrated into low-carbon mobility strategies.
However, market expansion remains uneven. While NGV penetration is growing in countries with mature infrastructure and policy support, others are facing stagnation due to inadequate refueling networks and the rapid rise of battery-electric alternatives. Automakers are also reassessing their NGV portfolios in light of shifting emission regulations and investment flows into hydrogen and electric vehicles.
Despite uncertainties, NGVs are likely to maintain relevance as a transitional solution—particularly in fleet-based operations and in regions where natural gas is cost-effective and readily available. Their role is evolving, from a mainstream alternative fuel option to a niche, pragmatic bridge toward cleaner transportation systems.
