Overview
Scope of the Report
The global Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 537 million in 2025 to US$ 1,020 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.7% from 2026 to 2032.
In 2025, global sales volume for Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB) reached 44,925 tons, with an average price of $12.21 per kilogram.
Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) is a butyric acid ester of partially acetylated cellulose. It consists of many models. Butyryl content and viscosity are two main indicators of cellulose acetate butyrate. Eastman is the only one company that produces cellulose acetate butyrate all over the world.
Eastman is a major producer of Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB) worldwide.
The raw material system for CAB consists of three core components: natural cellulose, organic acids, and their corresponding anhydrides. Natural cellulose, typically sourced from wood pulp or cotton pulp, serves as the structural backbone of CAB; acetic acid (or acetic anhydride) and butyric acid (or butyric anhydride) act as esterifying agents, providing the acetyl and butyryl groups, respectively. Industrially, butyric acid is primarily produced through the oxidation of butyraldehyde, though it can also be biosynthesized via the fermentation of carbohydrates; consequently, its price is subject to the dual influence of the petrochemical supply chain and agricultural commodity markets. In terms of cost structure, raw materials constitute the dominant share of the total production cost for CAB. Among these, cellulose pulp, acetic anhydride, and butyric anhydride (or butyric acid) represent the most significant cost items; butyric anhydride, in particular—due to concentrated production capacity and limited supply—exerts a substantial influence on overall costs through its price fluctuations. Energy consumption ranks as the second-largest cost factor, as multiple processing stages—including esterification, hydrolysis, precipitation, and drying—require substantial quantities of steam and electricity. Additionally, operating costs for catalysts (specifically sulfuric acid) and solvent recovery systems, equipment depreciation (reflecting the significant capital investment in specialized machinery such as reactors, distillation columns, and precipitation tanks), and labor expenses also account for a notable portion of the total cost. Given the extremely high process barriers involved in CAB production—which necessitate precise control over the degree of esterification, molecular weight adjustment, and impurity removal—these technical hurdles have historically led to a long-standing domestic reliance on imports, resulting in a distinct price premium for imported products.
