Overview
Scope of the Report
The global DC Electric Arc Furnaces market size is predicted to grow from US$ 144 million in 2025 to US$ 255 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.6% from 2026 to 2032.
An electric arc furnace (EAF) is a low cylindrical vessel constructed of thick steel plate. It features a dish-shaped refractory hearth and three vertical electrodes extending downward through a dome-shaped, removable roof. Typical shell diameters for 10-ton, 100-ton, and 300-ton EAFs are approximately 2.5, 6, and 9 meters, respectively. Electric arc furnaces use graphite electrodes to input electrical energy into the furnace, using the arc generated between the electrode tips and the charge as the heat source. Using electricity as a heat source, the furnace atmosphere can be adjusted, making it particularly advantageous for melting steels containing high levels of easily oxidizable elements. Using high-temperature flue gas from the furnace, the raw materials can be preheated through technology and equipment, achieving high efficiency, energy conservation, environmental protection, and high yield.
A DC electric arc furnace is an electric arc furnace powered by direct current. Like an AC electric arc furnace, it utilizes the arc generated between the electrodes and the charge (or molten bath) to generate heat for melting. It can be used to melt steel, alloys, and non-ferrous metals. A DC arc furnace converts three-phase AC power into single-phase DC power via thyristor rectification. An arc is generated between a furnace bottom electrode (anode) and a graphite electrode (cathode) to generate a smelting arc. The main differences between DC and AC arc furnace equipment include the addition of a rectifier, a single graphite electrode at the top instead of three, and the addition of a furnace bottom electrode. The primary charge for electric arc steelmaking is scrap steel. Generally speaking, higher carbon, nitrogen, and residue contents make the electric arc process less attractive for producing low-carbon tough steel.
As the global steel industry transitions toward green, low-carbon, efficient, and intelligent development, direct current electric arc furnaces (DC EAFs) are becoming a key area of steelmaking process upgrades. Compared to traditional AC EAFs, DC EAFs offer significant advantages, including lower electrode consumption, improved arc stability, higher energy efficiency, and more precise molten steel quality control. They are particularly well-suited for the smelting of high-value-added products such as special steels and high-quality alloy steels. Their performance in energy conservation and consumption reduction, improved smelting efficiency, and lower production costs are attracting significant attention from major global steelmakers and companies that utilize recycled steel resources.
Globally, core DC EAF companies include Steel Plantech, SMS Group, Primetals, IHI, Nippon Steel Engineering, and Danieli, with the top five companies accounting for over 60% of the market share.
Driven by the goals of achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality, the adoption of scrap-based mini-process steelmaking is accelerating globally. As a key component of this process, market demand for DC EAFs continues to rise. Especially under the background of policy promotion and capacity structure optimization in major steel countries such as China, India and Turkey, new and renovation projects of DC arc furnaces continue to emerge, giving rise to a huge market for equipment renewal and technology upgrades.

Dual-validation approach: bottom-up sizing aggregates segment-level production, consumption, and trade data; top-down sizing cross-validates against macroeconomic indicators and total addressable market estimates. Discrepancies >5% trigger analyst review.
Company profiles built from public financial disclosures, product launches, M&A activity, job postings (as capability proxies), and supply chain mapping. Market share estimates triangulated across revenue, capacity, and shipment data.
CAGR projections use time-series regression on 5-10 years of historical data, adjusted for identified demand drivers (technology adoption curves, regulatory catalysts, demographic shifts) and demand inhibitors (cost barriers, substitution risk). Scenario modeling covers base, optimistic, and conservative cases.
All quantitative outputs reviewed by a domain-specialist analyst before publication. Data triangulation requires minimum 3 independent sources for every key figure. Reports undergo a structured peer review against our 47-point quality checklist covering methodology, data citations, logical consistency, and formatting standards.
On-demand reports are generated at time of purchase, incorporating the most recent available data. Static reports are republished when underlying market conditions shift by >10% from baseline assumptions. Purchasers receive update notifications for 12 months.
