Overview

Scope of the Report

The global Isostearic Acid market size is predicted to grow from US$ 365 million in 2025 to US$ 506 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.8% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2024, global isostearic acid production reached 37,000 tons, with an average selling price of US$9,008 per ton.

Isostearic acid is a general name for a mixture of C18 saturated branched-chain fatty acids. It has the characteristics of linear unsaturated fatty acids and some of the characteristics of saturated fatty acids. It is liquid at room temperature and has good antioxidant properties. Therefore, isostearic acid is an important chemical intermediate with good commercial value and is widely used in lubricating base oils, metal cleaners, coatings, personal care and cosmetics, rubber and plastics and other fields.

Global key players of Isostearic Acid include Corda, Oleon, Kraton, etc. The top three players hold a share about 58%. Europe is the largest market, and has a share about 35%, followed by Asia-Pacific and North America with share 32% and 28%, separately. In terms of product type, Plant Based is the largest segment, occupied for a share of 85%. In terms of application, Lubricant & Greases has a share about 40 percent.

Due to its low melting point, high oxidative stability, good lubricity, and skin feel, resulting from its branched structure, isostearic acid is widely used in high-end cosmetics, environmentally friendly lubricants, metalworking fluids, and plastic lubricants. Its diverse derivatives can be customized to meet diverse performance requirements, making it a key functional fatty acid.

Currently, it is primarily produced by extracting dimer acid byproducts. Due to its low cost and wide availability of raw materials, this method still produces the majority of isostearic acid worldwide. Zeolite-catalyzed isomerization has been a breakthrough in China in recent years, offering high yields and low pollution. A 1,000-fold scale-up has been achieved.

Future Trend: Biocatalysis represents a green chemistry approach. While slightly more expensive, it complies with environmental regulations such as EU REACH and is gradually entering the industrialization stage.
