Overview

Scope of the Report

This report focuses on forecasting the market for two new types of sustainable aviation fuels, Methanol-to-Jet (MTJ) and Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ).

Methanol-to-Jet (MTJ) fuel is a type of synthetic jet fuel produced from green methanol through a chemical conversion process. It is considered a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and is being researched and developed as an alternative to traditional fossil-based jet fuels. Green methanol is produced either from biogenic feedstocks (e.g. biomass gasification) or from carbon dioxide (CO2) extracted from the air together with green hydrogen (from water electrolysis with sustainable electrical energy). However, it does not yet have regulatory certification for release as an aviation fuel (by the ASTM organization), which is currently being initiated.

ASTM first certified ATJ-SPK bioblends up to 50%v/v in 2016. The AtJ approach is being expanded through the addition of Alcohol to Jet Synthetic Kerosene with Aromatics (ATJ-SKA) which is similar to ATJ-SPK but contains a higher amount of aromatic compounds, which ensure the swelling of seals in current jet engines. ATJ fuels are considered a promising alternative to conventional crude oil jet fuel because they have the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce Aviation’s overall carbon footprint. These fuels are compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure, making them a viable option to help the aviation industry reduce its environmental impact.

Global key players of Methanol-to-Jet (MTJ) Fuel and Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) Fuel include LanzaJet, Gevo, Honeywell, Axens and Topsoe, etc.
