Overview
Scope of the Report
The global Poly(Propylene Carbonate) (PPC) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 245 million in 2025 to US$ 402 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.3% from 2026 to 2032.
Poly(Propylene Carbonate) is an aliphatic polycarbonate produced by the catalytic copolymerization of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide. It is a carbon dioxide based biodegradable polymer supplied mainly as resin pellets, powder, films, sheets, and modified compounds. The material offers good transparency, flexibility, gas barrier performance, and biodegradability, while its heat resistance and mechanical strength are commonly improved through blending, toughening, chain extension, or filler modification. Major production and commercialization activities are concentrated in China, South Korea, the United States, and Europe, with China playing an increasingly active role in industrial scale up and cost optimization. Key applications include biodegradable packaging films, agricultural mulch films, disposable products, cushioning foams, adhesives, coatings, modified compounds, and selected electronic binder systems.
In 2025, global Poly(Propylene Carbonate) production reached approximately 74,000 to 82,000 metric tons, with commercial shipments concentrated mainly in China and a limited number of overseas material suppliers. Resin pellets and modified compounds remained the dominant product forms. Influenced by propylene oxide cost, catalyst efficiency, plant operating rates, downstream biodegradable material demand, and the blending ratio in modified compounds, the average FOB price of industrial grade Poly(Propylene Carbonate) resin and compounds was approximately USD 2.9 to USD 3.6 per kg in 2025. High specification film grades, food contact oriented grades, and small volume specialty grades were priced above general purpose modified compounds.
Poly(Propylene Carbonate) is moving from technology validation toward broader commercial application. Its strongest market appeal lies in the ability to use carbon dioxide as one of its feedstocks, linking low carbon material narratives with biodegradable plastic substitution and high barrier packaging demand. As plastic reduction, circular economy policies, and carbon utilization initiatives continue to advance globally, Poly(Propylene Carbonate) offers a new material option for packaging, agricultural films, disposable products, and cushioning foams. Compared with some conventional biodegradable polymers, it has differentiated advantages in flexibility, transparency, and gas barrier performance, making it particularly suitable for blending with polylactic acid, polybutylene adipate terephthalate, and starch based materials. These blends can improve film toughness, barrier properties, and processing adaptability. As Chinese producers continue to promote large scale plants, feedstock integration, and catalyst optimization, the industry cost curve is expected to improve, allowing Poly(Propylene Carbonate) to move from a niche environmental material toward broader consumer packaging and industrial material applications.
The market still faces clear commercialization constraints. First, the heat resistance, strength, and processing window of Poly(Propylene Carbonate) remain weaker than those of some mature engineering plastics and mainstream biodegradable materials. Its standalone applications are therefore limited, and most end products require blending or modification. Second, fluctuations in propylene oxide prices, insufficient plant operating rates, long downstream certification cycles, and high cost sensitivity among end users may slow market expansion. For packaging and agricultural film customers, the material must meet cost, mechanical performance, processing stability, degradation compliance, and supply continuity requirements at the same time. Environmental positioning alone is not enough to drive large scale substitution. Over the next few years, market growth will mainly come from three demand areas: high barrier biodegradable packaging, biodegradable agricultural films and disposable products, and functional resin applications in adhesives, coatings, and electronic materials. Companies that can balance cost, performance, and scalable supply will be better positioned to lead the next stage of carbon dioxide based material commercialization.
