Overview

Scope of the Report

The global Reaction-Bonded Silicon Carbide Seal Ring market size is predicted to grow from US$ 90.75 million in 2025 to US$ 120 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.1% from 2026 to 2032.

Reaction-bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) sealing rings are manufactured by first creating a porous green body from silicon carbide powder, a carbon source, and molding additives. This body undergoes molten silicon infiltration, where free carbon reacts with the silicon to form new silicon carbide; this new material, combined with the original silicon carbide particles and a small amount of residual silicon, creates a dense SiSiC material. The final mechanical seal rotary or stationary rings are produced through diamond grinding, face lapping, and polishing. These products feature high hardness, excellent thermal conductivity, a low coefficient of thermal expansion, wear resistance, and thermal shock resistance, making them suitable for mechanical seals in industrial pumps, reactors, agitators, and pressure screens.

Upstream raw materials primarily include high-purity α-SiC powder, carbon sources (such as carbon black or graphite), metallic silicon, temporary binders (such as phenolic resin), and processing aids like dispersants, lubricants, and granulation additives; finishing processes require diamond grinding wheels, diamond micropowder, lapping plates, and polishing fluids. The production process typically involves batch mixing, spray granulation, dry pressing or isostatic pressing, debinding, pre-machining, vacuum silicon infiltration, cylindrical grinding, and precision lapping of the sealing face. Downstream, mechanical seal manufacturers assemble these rings with mating rings (made of carbon-graphite, pressureless-sintered silicon carbide, or cemented carbide) along with springs, auxiliary seals, and metal housings to create complete mechanical seal assemblies, which are ultimately installed in rotating fluid equipment such as industrial pumps, reactors, and mixing machinery.

In 2025, global sales volume for reaction-bonded silicon carbide sealing rings is approximately 5.5 million units, with ex-factory prices typically ranging from $5 to $30 per unit. Major manufacturers achieve gross profit margins of approximately 28% to 40%.
