Overview

Scope of the Report

The global Single Sided Friction Plate market size is predicted to grow from US$ 391 million in 2025 to US$ 535 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.7% from 2026 to 2032.

Single-sided friction plates are wet-running friction elements with friction material applied to only one side of a steel core plate. They operate in oil against separator plates, end plates, piston surfaces or reaction surfaces to provide torque transfer, brake holding, controlled slip, clutch engagement and higher torque density within limited axial space. They are used in clutch-pack end positions, special multi-disc clutch designs, automatic-transmission rebuild kits, wet brakes, powershift transmissions, construction machinery, agricultural machinery, forklifts, mining equipment and industrial drivetrains. Upstream inputs include specialty steel sheets, cellulose/aramid/carbon fibers, phenolic resins, elastomers, graphite, metal powders, sintered powders, adhesives, friction modifiers, molybdenum/ceramic coatings and ATF or hydraulic oil systems. Downstream applications include AT, wet DCT, HEV/DHT, AWD couplings, wet brakes, forklifts, loaders, tractors, haul trucks, marine drives and industrial clutches.

In 2025, global single sided friction plate production reached approximately 300 million units, with an average global market price is $1.3 per unit.

Single-sided friction plate is a friction plate with friction material applied to only one side of the steel core plate or carrier. It is a structural classification based on the arrangement of the friction material, rather than a product category defined by wet or dry operating conditions. Structurally and functionally, a single-sided friction plate normally consists of a steel core plate, a friction material layer on one side, a bonding layer, and groove geometry, and it works with steel plates, pressure plates, brake discs, or other mating components to form a friction pair. Because friction material is applied to only one side, design control focuses on friction-layer thickness consistency, bonding strength, flatness, thermal deformation, oil-flow path, and stable contact with the mating steel plate. In wet drivetrain systems, single-sided friction plates rely on oil cooling and lubrication to transmit torque, execute shift engagement, provide lock-up control, perform braking, or distribute power under the combined effects of engagement pressure, speed difference, and oil-film condition. Compared with double-sided friction plates, single-sided plates provide fewer active friction surfaces, but they can be advantageous in specific clutch-pack layouts where clearer friction-pair arrangement, heat-dissipation path control, local packaging design, and friction-interface management are required.

By material system, single-sided friction plates may use paper-based, carbon-based, non-woven, and other composite friction materials. Paper-based materials are the most widely used in automotive automatic transmissions and wet clutch systems because of their tunable friction behavior, good fluid compatibility, moderate cost, and stable high-volume production consistency. Carbon-based and high-performance composite materials are more common in drivetrain applications requiring higher thermal load capacity, higher energy density, frequent engagement, or longer durability. Actual product selection depends not only on friction material formulation, but also on steel plate surface roughness, fluid chemistry, groove geometry, engagement pressure, friction energy, operating temperature, control strategy, and NVH requirements.

From an application and development perspective, demand for single-sided friction plates is mainly supported by automatic transmissions, wet dual-clutch transmissions, hybrid transmissions, torque-converter lock-up systems, intelligent all-wheel-drive systems, and limited-slip differentials. As drivetrain systems move toward compact packaging, higher efficiency, higher torque density, lower drag loss, and smoother shift quality, single-sided friction plates must balance friction stability, heat resistance, wear resistance, reduced judder, low noise, fluid compatibility, and manufacturing consistency.
