Overview

Scope of the Report

The global Single-turn Optical Encoder market size is predicted to grow from US$ 336 million in 2025 to US$ 485 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.4% from 2026 to 2032.

A single-turn optical encoder is an optical motion sensor that reports the absolute angular position within one full revolution (0–360°) of a rotating shaft. “Single-turn” means the encoder tells you where you are within the current turn, but it does not keep a separate count of how many full turns have happened. If the shaft keeps rotating past 360°, the position pattern repeats in the next turn (so an angle like 361° is treated the same as 1° in many single-turn systems). This “within one revolution” idea is the core of the definition: single-turn encoders measure position across 360° and repeat the output every revolution, while multi-turn encoders add the ability to track the number of revolutions.

A single-turn optical encoder is an absolute encoder that gives a unique position code for angles within 0–360°, but it can also be used in systems that output incremental signals derived from optical sensing (for speed/direction) while still being “single-turn” in the sense of measurement range. In industrial language, “single-turn” is mainly used when discussing absolute encoders: single-turn absolute encoders track position within one revolution; multi-turn absolute encoders track position within one revolution and the number of revolutions.

In 2025, global Optical Encoders production reached approximately 3881 K Units, with an average global market price of around US$ 88.5 per unit. The global single-line production capacity ranges from 150 to 300 K Units per year. The industry's gross profit margin is approximately 30%-40%.

One clear trend is the steady shift from incremental feedback toward absolute feedback in many machine designs. The reason is simple: absolute feedback reduces commissioning time and improves recovery after power interruptions. HEIDENHAIN emphasizes that with the absolute measuring method, the position value is available immediately upon switch-on and there is no need to search for a reference position. IFM similarly points out that absolute encoders keep the absolute position value available even after power loss and don’t need a homing run after a power failure. As factories become more automated and less tolerant of downtime, this “no homing, faster restart” advantage becomes more valuable. In that environment, single-turn absolute encoders are often the simplest way to get the benefit of absolute position without paying for multi-turn capability that the application does not need.

A second trend is wider adoption in compact and integrated systems, especially motors and actuators that come as complete modules. Many OEMs want to buy a motor or joint module that already includes position sensing, rather than designing the sensing from scratch. Single-turn encoders are often enough for joints, pivot mechanisms, and wheels where the range of motion is limited or where the system can manage turn counting elsewhere if needed. The HEIDENHAIN examples (AGV drive wheels, blood pumps, entry-level motors) reflect exactly the types of compact systems where single-turn is attractive.

A third trend is the movement toward more digital connectivity and richer data, not only position. Modern controls want diagnostics, configuration, and sometimes additional sensor data delivered through the same connection. HEIDENHAIN notes that absolute interfaces allow the position value to be requested at any time and that some interfaces provide incremental signals as well; they also discuss additional data transfer and operating modes where encoders can be parameterized and used flexibly. This trend pushes encoder suppliers to offer more interface options, better EMC robustness, and smarter data handling—because the encoder is increasingly treated as an intelligent node in a motion network, not a passive sensor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current global Single-turn Optical Encoder market size?
The global Single-turn Optical Encoder market is estimated at US$ 336 million in 2025 (base year) and is projected to reach US$ 485 million by 2032.
What growth rate is expected for the Single-turn Optical Encoder market through 2032?
The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.4% from 2026 to 2032, expanding from US$ 336 million in 2025 to US$ 485 million in 2032, roughly 1.4 times its base-year value.
How is Single-turn Optical Encoder defined?
A single-turn optical encoder is an optical motion sensor that reports the absolute angular position within one full revolution (0–360°) of a rotating shaft. “Single-turn” means the encoder tells you where you are within the current turn, but it does not keep a separate count of how many full turns have happened. If the shaft keeps rotating past 360°, the position pattern repeats in the next turn (so an angle like 361° is treated the same as 1° in many single-turn systems).
How is the Single-turn Optical Encoder market segmented by type?
By type, the market is segmented into Linear Encoder and Rotary Encoder.
What are the key applications of Single-turn Optical Encoder?
