Special medical purpose infant formula is a powdered or liquid formula designed for the nutritional needs of infants with special medical conditions such as special disorders, diseases or medical conditions. It is mainly aimed at infants aged 0 to 12 months, especially those infants whose nutritional needs cannot be met through ordinary breastfeeding or standard infant formula due to various reasons (such as premature birth, low birth weight, lactose intolerance, food protein allergy, etc.). This type of food is mainly in powdered or liquid form, which is convenient for parents to prepare and use according to the specific situation and needs of the baby. According to the special medical needs of different infants, the nutritional ingredients of special medical purpose infant formula are adjusted and optimized. For example, for infants with lactose intolerance, other carbohydrates may be used completely or partially to replace lactose in the formula; for infants with milk protein allergy, the formula may use partial or deep hydrolysis of milk protein to reduce the allergenicity of milk protein.
The market for special medical purpose infant formula in my country has grown rapidly in recent years. With the implementation of the three-child policy and the enhancement of the supply capacity of medical services, more and more people need nutritional support clinically, and the demand for special medical food has shown an exponential upward trend. So far, a total of 164 special medical foods have been approved, including 133 domestic products and 31 imported products. These imported products mainly come from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the United States and other countries. Special medical purpose infant formula is a food designed for the growth needs of infants with special medical conditions. Ordinary infant formula milk powder cannot meet the nutritional needs of such infants. With the increase in clinical demand for nutritional support, the market demand for special medical purpose infant formula will continue to expand.
