Overview
Scope of the Report
The global Sulfur Tolerant CO Shift Catalyst market size is predicted to grow from US$ 126 million in 2025 to US$ 163 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.8% from 2026 to 2032.
Sulfur tolerant CO shift catalysts are a class of water-gas shift catalysts capable of maintaining activity in synthesis gas containing H₂S, COS, and other sulfides; they primarily facilitate the reaction between CO and water vapor to produce H₂ and CO₂. Their key characteristic is that they allow sulfur-containing raw synthesis gas to undergo the shift reaction prior to desulfurization—distinguishing them from iron-chromium-based high-temperature shift catalysts and copper-zinc-based low-temperature shift catalysts, which are primarily used for clean gas streams.
Upstream production relies on active metal precursors such as cobalt salts and molybdates, while supports typically consist of alumina, pseudoboehmite, magnesium oxide, or magnesium-aluminum spinel. Additives—including potassium, nickel, and zirconium salts, rare-earth promoters, binders, and pore-expanding agents—are incorporated to meet specific requirements regarding low-temperature activity, coke resistance, and organic sulfur conversion. Midstream processing involves support preparation, shaping, impregnation, drying, calcination, and activation to produce catalysts in spherical, cylindrical, or specially shaped forms. Downstream applications primarily involve sulfur-containing synthesis gas shift units in processes such as coal gasification and heavy oil gasification.
Global sales volume is projected to reach approximately 10,800 metric tons in 2025, with prices typically ranging from $9 to $14 per kilogram; specific pricing varies based on factors such as the active catalytic system, operating temperature range, delivery state, plant scale, and technical service requirements.
