Overview

Scope of the Report

The global Surgical Energy Instruments market size is predicted to grow from US$ 17,100 million in 2025 to US$ 24,250 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% from 2026 to 2032.

Surgery refers to the process of using instruments, operated by surgeons or other professionals, to penetrate the human body or other biological tissues to remove lesions, alter their structure, or implant foreign objects. Energy surgery is one of the seven major sub-categories of minimally invasive surgical instruments; the other six include staplers, sutures, biomaterials, handheld instruments, hernia repair, and tumor ablation.

Energy surgical devices use electrical energy (electrosurgery) or mechanical energy (ultrasonic surgery) to perform procedures such as cutting, coagulation, and hemostasis. Energy surgical devices can be categorized as electrosurgical and ultrasonic.

Based on our research, the global Surgical Energy Instruments market has developed into a mature yet structurally growing industry, built on a well-established foundation of high-frequency electrosurgery, with advanced bipolar vessel sealing and ultrasonic energy representing the primary upgrade pathways. The continued development of integrated multi-energy platforms is further increasing product value and expanding the functional scope of surgical energy systems.

From a supply perspective, the strongest competitors have evolved from single-instrument suppliers into platform-based providers capable of offering generators, energy instruments, disposable consumables, and digital device-management capabilities within an integrated ecosystem. In 2025, Johnson & Johnson launched the DUALTO Energy System, integrating monopolar, bipolar, ultrasonic, and advanced bipolar energy modalities into a configurable platform while also supporting digital device management. Olympus subsequently introduced the next-generation THUNDERBEAT II, further strengthening its hybrid energy strategy based on the combination of ultrasonic and advanced bipolar technologies.

From a product technology perspective, Surgical Energy Instruments are evolving from conventional fixed-output systems toward tissue sensing, closed-loop energy feedback, reduced thermal damage, more reliable vessel sealing, and greater platform integration. Traditional monopolar and bipolar technologies continue to benefit from relatively low cost, broad procedural applicability, and a large installed base in hospitals, and are therefore unlikely to be replaced in the near term. However, their scope for product differentiation and premium pricing is relatively limited. By comparison, advanced bipolar and ultrasonic energy devices can provide greater procedural efficiency in tissue dissection, rapid hemostasis, and sealing of larger vessels, making them key areas of future value growth. The next stage of development is expected to center on integrating multiple energy modalities into a common generator platform, using real-time tissue sensing to dynamically adjust energy delivery and improving compatibility across different surgical instruments. For example, Mindray’s current ultrasonic surgical and electrosurgical energy platform incorporates tissue-sensing and enhanced vessel-sealing technologies and supports vessel sealing of up to 7 mm. Medtronic, meanwhile, received CE certification in 2025 for its LigaSure RAS vessel-sealing technology for use with the Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system and continued to advance regulatory submissions for new robotic LigaSure instruments in 2026.

Key global surgical energy device companies include Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Olympus, Smith & Nephew, ConMed Corporation, Stryker, Nikkiso, Erbe Elektromedizin, KLS Martin, Utah Medical Products, B. Braun, and LED SPA. Different companies target different core markets. For example, Medtronic focuses on Ultrasonic Energy Instrument (such as Force Triad); Johnson & Johnson strengthened its energy equipment layout by acquiring Ethicon. Its ENSEAL series (Ultrasonic) and GYRUS series (Plasma) cover multiple departments such as gynecology and urology.

Scenario modeling covers base, optimistic, and conservative cases.
