Overview
Scope of the Report
The global Wastewater Treatment Monitoring Software market size is predicted to grow from US$ 2,397 million in 2025 to US$ 4,539 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.5% from 2026 to 2032.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Monitoring and Control Software refers to facility-level industrial software and data platforms deployed in municipal wastewater treatment plants, industrial wastewater treatment stations, sewage pump stations, lift stations, sludge treatment units, reclaimed water systems and centralized utility operation centers. These systems use SCADA, DCS, HMI, historians, IoT telemetry, edge control, cloud data platforms, digital twins, process optimization algorithms and compliance reporting modules to collect, monitor, control, analyze and visualize operational data. Typical monitored data include influent flow and water quality, headworks operation, biological treatment parameters, aeration performance, chemical dosing, sludge thickening and dewatering, effluent quality, pump station levels, equipment status, alarms, energy consumption, chemical consumption, maintenance records, shift reports, regulatory reporting and multi-site operational indicators. The software supports stable compliance, remote visibility, process optimization, energy management, alarm handling, audit trails and asset maintenance, forming the digital foundation for modern wastewater facility operation.
Based on our research, wastewater treatment monitoring software should be understood as a facility-side software market that combines industrial control, operational data management, regulatory compliance and process optimization. Municipal wastewater treatment plants require continuous monitoring across influent, headworks, biological treatment, dosing, sludge treatment and effluent quality; pump stations and lift stations require telemetry around levels, pump status, alarms, energy use and overflow risks; and industrial wastewater treatment facilities require tighter monitoring of variable influent quality, process stability and interlocks. The long-term demand foundation remains significant because wastewater treatment coverage is still incomplete globally. UN-Water’s 2024 update reports that about 42% of household wastewater worldwide was not safely treated before discharge in 2022, indicating that both new infrastructure and digital upgrades of existing assets remain structurally important. From a supply-side perspective, the market is formed by several distinct vendor groups rather than one homogeneous software category. Industrial automation suppliers provide the SCADA, DCS, HMI and control-system backbone; water digital platform vendors provide data integration, modeling and digital twins; telemetry suppliers serve pump stations, collection networks and distributed assets; operational data software vendors focus on WIMS, compliance reporting, operator logs and regulatory records; and local automation software providers support domestic implementation and project customization in markets such as China. In this sector, buyers evaluate more than software screens. They usually consider control reliability, field-proven wastewater experience, interface compatibility, alarm performance, cybersecurity, maintenance support and the supplier’s ability to operate in mission-critical environments. From a demand-side perspective, growth is not driven only by new wastewater treatment plants. A large part of incremental demand comes from modernization of aging facilities, remote pump station connectivity, automated compliance reporting, energy optimization and centralized operations for multi-plant utility groups. Aeration systems and pump groups are among the most important energy-consuming assets in many wastewater plants, so software value is moving beyond simple visualization toward closed-loop optimization, energy control and predictive diagnostics. The revised EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive entered into force on 1 January 2025 and aims to strengthen wastewater collection and treatment while improving protection for public health and the environment, supporting demand for more granular monitoring and reporting. From a technology roadmap perspective, on-premise SCADA and DCS will remain the operational foundation for plant stability, but the incremental value pool is moving toward cloud data platforms, digital twins, AI-enabled anomaly detection, aeration optimization, predictive maintenance and multi-site dashboards. At the same time, the increasing use of remote access and web-connected HMIs raises cybersecurity requirements for water and wastewater systems. CISA’s 2024 guidance specifically highlights the risks of internet-exposed HMIs in the water and wastewater sector and encourages utilities to harden remote access. This means future competition will increasingly depend on a supplier’s combined capabilities in reliable control, data governance, compliance automation, cybersecurity and optimization algorithms.
