Overview

Scope of the Report

The global Zinc Battery market size is predicted to grow from US$ 781 million in 2025 to US$ 2,347 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.1% from 2026 to 2032.

Zinc batteries, as defined in this report, are rechargeable secondary batteries in which metallic zinc, zinc alloy, zinc powder, zinc paste, or zinc reversibly deposited during charging serves as the principal active material of the negative electrode. Repeated charge and discharge are achieved through the reduction of zinc ions, the redeposition of metallic zinc, or the regeneration of the zinc electrode. Depending on the positive-electrode material and electrochemical reaction mechanism, the major product categories include nickel-zinc batteries, zinc-ion and rechargeable zinc-manganese batteries, zinc-halogen batteries, rechargeable zinc-air batteries, rechargeable silver-zinc batteries, and other rechargeable zinc-based systems. These batteries may adopt sealed static, flow-battery, or other non-flow architectures and may be supplied as cells, monobloc batteries, modules, battery packs, battery cabinets, or containerized energy-storage systems.

The upstream supply chain includes battery-grade zinc powder, zinc oxide, nickel compounds, manganese dioxide, halides, silver oxide, electrolytes, separators, ion-exchange membranes, current collectors, and electrode additives. The midstream segment covers cell manufacturing, module assembly, battery management systems, and energy-storage system integration. Major downstream applications include data-center UPS systems, AI computing infrastructure, telecommunications backup power, grid and renewable-energy storage, commercial and industrial energy storage, vehicle starting and auxiliary power, rail transportation, aerospace, defense, subsea equipment, medical devices, and flexible electronics. EverZinc has established a dedicated materials business for rechargeable zinc batteries, while separator suppliers such as Celgard are also advancing technical cooperation in nickel-zinc, zinc-air, and related battery systems.

This report covers complete rechargeable zinc-based cells, monobloc batteries, modules, battery packs, battery cabinets, and integrated energy-storage systems with reversible charge-discharge capability. Primary zinc-carbon batteries, primary alkaline zinc-manganese batteries, disposable zinc-air button cells, non-rechargeable activated silver-zinc batteries, standalone zinc materials, separators, power conversion systems, inverters, EPC services, and long-term operation and maintenance services are excluded.

In 2025, the global equivalent shipment capacity of Zinc batteries will be approximately 2.8 GWh, with a weighted average ex-factory price of approximately US$285/kWh; under mature mass production conditions, the gross profit margin on the manufacturing end will be approximately 20% to 35%.

The zinc battery market is not based on a single electrochemical system. It is developing along two principal commercialization pathways, while retaining several smaller but high-value specialty segments.

The first pathway is the high-power, short-duration market represented by nickel-zinc batteries. Key applications include data-center UPS systems, AI computing infrastructure, telecommunications equipment, intelligent transportation, engine starting, and defense systems. ZincFive generated approximately US$66.9 million in revenue in 2025 and reported nearly 2 GW of deployed and contracted systems, indicating that nickel-zinc technology has moved beyond demonstration projects and entered commercial deployment in data centers and critical infrastructure. Its competitive advantage is not long-duration energy storage, but high-rate power output, compact footprint, rapid repeated power response, and substantially lower fire and thermal-runaway risk than conventional lithium-ion systems.

The second pathway targets medium- and long-duration stationary energy storage for utilities, microgrids, renewable-energy projects, and commercial and industrial users. This segment includes zinc-ion, rechargeable zinc-manganese, zinc-halogen, and rechargeable zinc-air systems. Eos Energy generated approximately US$114.2 million in revenue in 2025, while customer deliveries increased by 609% year on year. Its year-end backlog reached approximately US$701.5 million, representing about 2.8 GWh, indicating that large-scale zinc-based energy-storage projects are entering the production-expansion and project-execution stage. Enerpoly is advancing a zinc-ion production facility with a planned annual capacity of 100 MWh, while Godrej Enterprises and Urban Electric Power operate an approximately 50 MWh pilot production line for rechargeable zinc-manganese batteries in India. These projects remain in the transition from pilot manufacturing to larger-scale commercial delivery.

Rechargeable silver-zinc batteries and flexible printed zinc batteries form smaller but higher-value specialty markets, serving aerospace, defense, subsea equipment, medical devices, and IoT applications. The main growth opportunities for zinc batteries are unlikely to come from passenger electric vehicles. More promising markets include high-power UPS and AI load buffering for data centers, indoor energy storage with stringent fire-safety requirements, four- to sixteen-hour grid storage, remote microgrids, military systems, subsea equipment, and aerospace power supplies.

Most commercial zinc battery systems use aqueous or low-flammability electrolytes, resulting in a materially lower risk of the self-sustaining thermal runaway and flame propagation associated with lithium-ion batteries. Zinc, manganese, and related materials also have relatively diversified supply chains and do not depend heavily on lithium, cobalt, or graphite. However, commercialization still faces technical constraints, including zinc dendrite formation, hydrogen evolution, corrosion, changes in zinc-electrode morphology, cathode degradation, electrolyte management, coulombic efficiency, cycle-life consistency, and manufacturing yield. Rechargeable zinc-air systems additionally face challenges related to bifunctional air-electrode efficiency and the relatively large voltage gap between charging and discharging.

Through 2032, competition is expected to shift from raw-material cost alone toward cycle life, round-trip efficiency, power density, zinc dendrite and hydrogen-evolution control, production yield, lifecycle storage cost, and project bankability. Zinc batteries are therefore more likely to complement lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries in differentiated applications than to replace them across the entire battery market.

03
Competitive Intelligence

Company profiles built from public financial disclosures, product launches, M&A activity, job postings (as capability proxies), and supply chain mapping. Market share estimates triangulated across revenue, capacity, and shipment data.

04
Demand Forecasting

CAGR projections use time-series regression on 5-10 years of historical data, adjusted for identified demand drivers (technology adoption curves, regulatory catalysts, demographic shifts) and demand inhibitors (cost barriers, substitution risk). Scenario modeling covers base, optimistic, and conservative cases.

05
Analyst Validation & Quality Assurance

All quantitative outputs reviewed by a domain-specialist analyst before publication. Data triangulation requires minimum 3 independent sources for every key figure. Reports undergo a structured peer review against our 47-point quality checklist covering methodology, data citations, logical consistency, and formatting standards.
