Overzicht
Scope of the Report
The global Millimeter-wave sensor market size is predicted to grow from US$ 8,333 million in 2025 to US$ 19,214 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.7% from 2026 to 2032.
A millimeter-wave sensor is a sensing device that operates in the millimeter-wave frequency band (typically 30–300 GHz) to detect objects and measure parameters such as distance, velocity, and direction. The sensor transmits millimeter-wave signals and analyzes the reflected signals from targets. By applying Doppler effect analysis and time-of-flight calculations, it can determine object position and motion characteristics. Millimeter-wave sensors are capable of operating reliably in challenging environments such as fog, smoke, dust, and low-light conditions.
A typical system consists of millimeter-wave RF chips, antenna arrays, signal processing modules, and control algorithms. Key technologies include high-frequency RF integrated circuit design, phased-array antenna technology, frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar algorithms, target recognition and signal processing techniques, and low-power system integration.
Upstream industries include RF semiconductor chip manufacturers, antenna and packaging material suppliers, electronic component providers, and algorithm development companies. Downstream applications include automotive advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), industrial detection systems, security monitoring solutions, and intelligent IoT devices. The overall industry gross margin generally ranges from 30% to 55%, positioning it within the sensor and automotive electronics segment.
The global production of millimeter-wave sensors is projected to reach 352 million units by 2025, with an average price of $24.2 per unit.
Based on our research, millimeter-wave radar sensors are a high-growth sensing category driven by automotive intelligence, industrial IoT and contactless consumer sensing. Their core value lies in robust non-contact detection of distance, velocity, angle, movement and presence under conditions where cameras, passive infrared sensors, ultrasonic sensors or LiDAR may face limitations, such as rain, fog, dust, darkness, glare, privacy-sensitive environments or partial occlusion. Automotive ADAS remains the largest demand source, with 77GHz and 79GHz front radars, corner radars and 4D imaging radars supporting AEB, ACC, blind-spot detection, lane-change assistance, rear cross-traffic alert, door-opening warning and highway assistance. At the same time, 60GHz radar sensors are expanding into in-cabin sensing, child presence detection, vital-sign monitoring, smart-home presence sensing, gesture recognition and consumer electronics. The category therefore spans both high-volume automotive modules and small, low-power radar chips for consumer and industrial sensing.
From the supply side, the market has a layered structure. Semiconductor companies compete in radar SoCs, transceivers, RF front ends and antenna-in-package devices, where integration, power consumption, channel count, noise performance and functional-safety support are critical. Automotive Tier1 suppliers compete in complete radar sensor assemblies, vehicle integration, software stack, OEM validation and mass-production capability. Specialist radar companies focus on industrial, traffic, robotics, healthcare, smart-home and 4D imaging radar applications. China has become an increasingly important supply region, with domestic chip companies and radar module suppliers entering both automotive and non-automotive markets. However, the broad vendor pool should not be confused with the core supplier list: many companies only provide ADAS algorithms, whole vehicles, 5G RF components or distribution services, while the core market should be limited to suppliers of mmWave radar chips, modules and sensor assemblies.
Demand growth will remain strongest in automotive applications. As ADAS functions become standard across more vehicle segments, the number of radar sensors per vehicle is rising. Entry-level vehicles may adopt front and rear corner radars, while higher-level ADAS and automated-driving platforms use multiple corner radars, front long-range radar, in-cabin radar and increasingly high-resolution or 4D imaging radar. Non-automotive applications are growing from a smaller base. Smart buildings, healthcare monitoring, senior care, industrial safety, traffic management, robotics and drones are adopting radar because it provides privacy-preserving sensing and reliable performance in challenging environments. The market will therefore grow through both vehicle content expansion and broader adoption in IoT and industrial applications, although ASP pressure will increase as chip integration improves and more regional suppliers enter mass production.
From a technology perspective, the industry is moving away from legacy 24GHz radar toward 77GHz/79GHz automotive radar, 60GHz low-power short-range sensing and higher-channel-count 4D imaging radar. The 24GHz band remains relevant in industrial, traffic and legacy sensing applications, but 77GHz and 79GHz offer higher resolution, smaller antenna size and wider bandwidth for next-generation vehicles. The 60GHz band is becoming a key platform for in-cabin monitoring, smart-home sensing and consumer electronics because of its compact design and suitability for short-range detection. 4D imaging radar, radar-on-chip integration, antenna-in-package, mutual-interference mitigation and AI-assisted radar perception will shape the next stage of competition. Overall, the industry is in a growth phase with strong long-term potential, but value will shift toward high-integration chips, automotive-grade reliability, advanced algorithms and software-defined radar capabilities rather than simple low-end modules.
